My brother's vet gave him glucosamine for his 12 year old rottweiler and it seemed to help. You can get your first supply from your veterinarian, but be aware of the dosage because you can buy the human form much cheaper and it is the same thing. It will take several weeks before you notice a change. Keep him on the pain pill for a while after you start the glucosamine.
References :
Talk to your vet about using some pain medication and nutritional supplements. Many of these will help arthritic dogs. Also feeding a good quality diet and keeping the excess weight off will help too. Sometimes exercise like swimming in warm water will help loosen up the stiff joints. So talk to your vet for a good treatment plan.
References :
hey there,
Many aging dogs develop arthiritis due to under exersizing them or purely out of old age. Many vets have a number of preoceddures takin to releve the pest pain, usually by pain releif, massage theropy and other treatments. It can be a little pricey but i assure u its worthit my 19yo has arthiritis and its seems he doesnt have it all, we ungeroe monthly treatment which keeps him painless and i am still able to take him for walks and romps around my park, before the treatment he seemd very stiff and lazed around most of the day by the way he is An anatolian Shep, and the bigger the dog the more weight it has on im. So if u can afford try and look at as many theropy stategies as possible

Good Luck :)
References :
personal exp.

Your dog is hurting badly and you need to consider what is best for the dog and not yourself. Has the vet suggested other treatment? Did he think you should consider putting the dog to sleep? A ramp built out of lumber for only two steps won't cost more than $20.00. Just take two 2x4's for the sides and six 1x4's and cut them two feel wide and nail them together and the dog will be able to get outside.
References :
Years of owning dogs.

I've heard glucosamine helps their joints. you could also just buy a long flat board to use for a ramp and put cross strips in it so your dog doesn't just slide down it.
