At a recent vet trip I found out my dog, Samuel, a Lhasa Apso/Gordon Setter cross has hip dysplasia in his left hip, and a luxating patella in his right knee. I feel so sorry for him! I was wondering, should I buy him an orthopedic bed? Should I put him on a glucosomine/chondroitin supplement? I feed him Honest Kitchen Embark Dehydrated Dog Food. Is this a good food? Any other advice will be greatly appreciated.
I would try a glucosamine chrondroitin supplement, but would find one that includes MSM (work as an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever). Most people report a definite and noticeable improvement when supplementing with a joint formulation.
I have never heard of Honest Kitchen, but the ingredients look good although it is probably short on meat content since they list it as turkey (inclusive of water instead of a meal form). There is actually more flaxseed than meat. Flaxseed is good for arthritis, but I would think that a diet based on flaxseed might cause soft stools since it is also a laxative.

If you go the supplement route, check out Fit Dog Flex-Tra. It's what I currently use. I was using Missing Link and did a switch to Flex-Tra and the improvement has been simply amazing.
Oh, I have a 9 year old lab with some joint issues.

The glucosaminie only works depending on the stage you are in. Your vet should have given you something for your dog. We used to put an old tee shirt of old bath towel under the dogs belly and hold an end in each hand and lift the dog to help it walk. Hang in there.
