My beagle has terrible arthritis. He is getting up there in age. We give him baby asprin, Gulcosamine and Chonjointin (sp) sorry, and a multivitman for senior dogs, he's 16. Do you have any other suggestions for my little friend to help him be more comfortable. He also has an orthopedic bed……geez I know this sounds like Im going over board, but we love him dearly. Thank you..I really would appreciate some more suggestions.
His arthritis is in his hind quaters..Thanks again
Hmmm, my dog is 11 and has arthritis in his left hind-quarters. I suggest Rimadyl, which is an anti-inflammatory drug.
Although most dogs respond well to Rimadyl, it is capable of causing liver toxicity in some animals, and in the early days of introduction there were significant anecdotal reports of sudden animal deaths arising from its use. These risks are minor. However, i DO strongly suggest your dog (because of his age) to take a blood test before taking Rimadyl, purely to monitor his progress through-out the treatment, and/or any malfunctions that should occur at any point.
Rimadyl is a "kind" drug in the sense that your dog will most probably think that it is a daily treat and will willingly gobble it up with pleasure. There is no force involved in getting your dog to take this medication. I have had no problems with my dog (so far!).
Please note that however great this drug may seem, it cannot be taken with other certain drugs at the same time. I recommend having a chat with your Vet to discuss the medication your dog is on now and whether Rimadyl is best or the other drugs he is taking at the moment.
I hope this suggestion helps you further and your dog has a healthy prosperous life on Rimadyl, (if he does take it).
i have a rotty lab mix she is 8 yrs old and about 115 to 130 pounds not over weight she is half german rotty. lately she has been showing signs of aging muzzle starting to grey and limping on occasion, plus after sleeping she has moans a little while getting up. the vet says shes just feeling her age and that her joints are fine, we have recently purchased her an orthopedic bed that’s lifted off the floor. is there anything else we can do to ease her pain? the limping varies from front to back and side to side its never the same leg or the whole front or back and she doesn’t limp and whine everyday.
There is an over the counter drug called glucosamine that many pet owners and humans take for both joint pain and arthritis. It has been known to be a very effective anti-inflammatory natural drug.
Try giving your dog shorter more often walks. Even though they have joint pain cutting out walks can be cause more pain and long walks can do the same. Try giving your dog 2-3, 5-10 min walks a day..Go by what you feel is right for dog.. even try a few trials to figure out what works best.
Ask your vet about water therapy and acupuncture. Both of these have been known to be very helpful and effective for reducing pain. Some areas have a swimming pool dedicated to just animals.
My 8 year old Beagle Brownier has athritis and it’s worsening quickly. He has an orthopedic bed and raised food and everything except now he walks all crooked in the morning because he’s stiff. And he can hardly make it down 2 steps to get to the lawn. We would get a ramp but we cant afford it. We have him on a pain pill that our vet gives us. What should I do? Please help?
I have a question. What kind of materials could be used to make a ramp that are like everday materials that I would have??
No, my vet does not want us to put him to sleep until he's having more bad days than he is good and that hasn't happened yet, thankfully. Well we would try something like swimming except for the big part that he hates water. So I guess thats not an option. We'll try a joint supplement.
Your dog is hurting badly and you need to consider what is best for the dog and not yourself. Has the vet suggested other treatment? Did he think you should consider putting the dog to sleep? A ramp built out of lumber for only two steps won’t cost more than $20.00. Just take two 2×4’s for the sides and six 1×4’s and cut them two feel wide and nail them together and the dog will be able to get outside.
At a recent vet trip I found out my dog, Samuel, a Lhasa Apso/Gordon Setter cross has hip dysplasia in his left hip, and a luxating patella in his right knee. I feel so sorry for him! I was wondering, should I buy him an orthopedic bed? Should I put him on a glucosomine/chondroitin supplement? I feed him Honest Kitchen Embark Dehydrated Dog Food. Is this a good food? Any other advice will be greatly appreciated.
I would try a glucosamine chrondroitin supplement, but would find one that includes MSM (work as an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever). Most people report a definite and noticeable improvement when supplementing with a joint formulation.
I have never heard of Honest Kitchen, but the ingredients look good although it is probably short on meat content since they list it as turkey (inclusive of water instead of a meal form). There is actually more flaxseed than meat. Flaxseed is good for arthritis, but I would think that a diet based on flaxseed might cause soft stools since it is also a laxative.
Our dog is paralyzed from waist back, no feeling, no movement, no bowel or bladder control. We picked her up from the neurologist last night. It has been a rough 24 hours. We got her an orthopedic bed, diapers, and have ordered her a wheelchair. Anyone have any success stories? We will be doing physical therapy with her, including driving her to hydrotherapy 2 hours away, once per week. Can she recover? Will she recover? I am overwhelemed with clean up duty, diaper duty, picking her up, exercises, etc. and it has only been 24 hours. I need encouragement, tips, real-life success stories. Anyone care for a paralyzed dog? Any therapy tips? How best to deal with the incontinence? She is 55 pound, 7 year old Chow/Golden Mix. She is a bit grumpy but still same ole Keegan, fully alert, fully using front legs, barks, licks, whines, etc.
I knew of a paralyzed dachshund that lived for over 10 years with a wheelchair and diapers. The owners had to express her bladder on a daily basis & keep her clean "back there". I can imagine that it would be quite challenging with her size lifting her up! I would really recommend that you see if there are alternative therapies that may help like hydrotherapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, I have seen these work wonders with pets in similar situations! When you ask if she will get better I would definately see what the neurologist has to say about that because they have done all of the testing on her.
Best of luck! You seem very commited to seeing this work out & I hope it does!
Looking for cheap dog crates doesn’t mean you like your canine pal any less, sometimes we just cannot afford the finer luxuries for our dogs. No matter the case, you can purchase the perfect crate for your dog and make it comfortable for them to be in.

She is already on prescription meds from the vet, and doing ok most days. Will massaging the afflicted shoulder help? If so what's the best way to massage a dogs shoulder? I use heating pads and she has a heated orthopedic bed, but was wondering if there was anything else that might help my girl?
She is such a wonderful dog and I want to make her senior years as comfortable as possible. So any suggestions or websites with good tips to relieve discomfort would be wonderful.
YES!!! Massaging helps! My dogs are getting older and its like when you get your feet rubbed after a long day, they like their feet rubbed too, Massage it, but not to hard! Hope she feels better

I have been told by my Veterinarian to purchase a durable dog bed and I wasn't sure on who has the best pet memory foams dog beds for orthopedic conditions in my older dog buddy.
Does anyone know more about K9 orthopedics and can refer me to a truly orthopedic ped bed and maybe a Pet travel bed?
Thanks,
Cindy
